Mochi · almost 1 year old · Bogotá

The cat who does tricks… and stars in his own books

Mochi is a real cat. He comes when called, sits, stands up on two legs and fetches paper balls like a dog. He talks a lot, asks for hugs and is also the star of «Las aventuras de Mochi» (Mochi's Adventures), coloring and story books to share as a family.

What I can already do

My tricks

My human, Ricardo, taught me with small treats and lots of patience. I love my creamy treat.

  • “aquí”

    I come when called

“Aquí” means “here”. And if there's a treat, I run up onto the chair, the table or my cat tree.

  • “sit”

    I sit

You ask, and I sit down with my tail neatly curled.

  • “arriba”

I stand up on two legs

“Arriba” means “up”: I stand nice and tall, as if I wanted to see over the table.

  • fetch

    I fetch paper balls

My favorite game: someone makes a little paper ball with a knot, throws it, and I bring it back. Yes, like a dog.

  • “stay”

    Learning to stay

I still get distracted by everything: for now I can hold it for a few seconds, with a treat. I share my progress on Instagram.

How I learn: with small cat treats, in short sessions and only when I feel like it. Never forced and never punished.

The cat who asks for hugs

I talk a lot: I meow so people will play with me and to ask for cuddles. If you answer, I lie on your chest and rub my head with my paw, as if I were covering my eyes.

And when someone picks me up and I'm feeling cuddly, I hug the hand that pets me with both paws.

Meow. (Play with me.)

What is it, Mochi?

Meeeow. (And a hug.)

My mischief

My cat tree and the two chairs that weren't mine

My cat tree is worn out from so much use: I climb it, scratch it and nap on top. And the two living-room chairs… let's just say I've used them a lot too.

When I overdo it, Ricardo takes me to my cat tree, which is the right place for it. I think I'm due a new scratching post.

Mochi's Adventures

And I also star in my own books

This part is for parents, grandparents and teachers: here is what the books are like.

In my books I go traveling: I want to find out how people celebrate in Spain and Latin America. Each book has a story to read together, pictures to color and spot-the-difference games. They are for children ages 4 and up.

To draw Mochi we start from his photos: the dark face, the blue eyes, the fluffy chest and that tail that looks like a feather duster. In the books we add a bell to his collar, which is what sets Chispa's magic in motion.

The illustrations are made with the help of artificial intelligence; then we clean them up and check them one by one. How we make our books.

Drawing of Chispa, a small hummingbird with a three-feather crest and open wings

And this is my friend Chispa

He's a tiny hummingbird who knows the paths of the wind. When I ring my bell and he flaps his wings really, really fast, a magic breeze picks us up and flies us somewhere new in an instant.

Chispa is made up. Mochi is not.

The series

Three journeys, three celebrations

  • Cover of La noche de los disfraces (Costume Night): Mochi in a witch hat among pumpkins, marigolds and Chispa the hummingbird

Book 1 · Halloween and the Day of the Dead

Costume Night (La noche de los disfraces)

It's October 31 and Mochi has no costume… yet! With Chispa he sets off to find a very special one, with a piece from every place: the Castañada in Catalonia, Samaín in Galicia, the Day of the Dead in Mexico, the giant kites of Guatemala, Witches' Night in Chile and much more, with nothing scary at all.

  • Cover of Una Navidad en familia (A Family Christmas): Mochi in a paper boat on a cloud at night, with Chispa and a star above a town

    Book 2 · Christmas

A Family Christmas (Una Navidad en familia)

The star on the nativity scene is broken! Mochi and Chispa travel across Spain and Latin America to make it shine again: Colombia's little candles, Mexico's posadas, Puerto Rico's parranda, Catalonia's Tió and many more traditions.

  • Cover of ¡Fiesta de colores! (A Festival of Colors): a girl in a yellow skirt, carnival dancers and Mochi with maracas

Book 3 · Carnivals and festivals

A Festival of Colors (¡Fiesta de colores!)

Mochi wants to show his family a little of every culture so they can all celebrate together. With Chispa he visits the most joyful festivals of the year: the Blacks and Whites Carnival in Pasto, cumbia in Barranquilla, the silleteros of Medellín, the Diablada of Oruro, the chirigotas of Cádiz and many more.
